Frequently Asked Questions
In British English, "and" is used before the tens and units when writing out hundreds: "one hundred and twenty-five." In American English, "and" is technically optional and often omitted — "one hundred twenty-five" — though many Americans use it in speech. In formal legal and financial documents in the US, "and" typically marks the decimal point: "$12.50" = "twelve dollars and fifty cents." This tool uses British style by default (with "and").
Ordinal numbers express position or rank: first, second, third, fourth… They're used for dates ("the twenty-fifth of December"), competition rankings ("she finished third"), and sequential items. Cardinal numbers express quantity: one, two, three. Most ordinals simply add "-th" to the cardinal (four → fourth), except for irregular forms: one → first, two → second, three → third, five → fifth, eight → eighth, nine → ninth, twelve → twelfth.
