Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are essentially the same type of consumption tax — the difference is mainly in the name used by each country. Both are collected at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming tax on inputs. Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India call it GST; the UK and EU call it VAT.
The GST calculation formula for Australia (10%) is straightforward:
Adding GST: Net price × 1.10 = GST-inclusive price. e.g. $100 × 1.10 = $110.
Removing GST from an inclusive price: Inclusive price ÷ 1.10 = net price. e.g. $110 ÷ 1.10 = $100. The GST amount is $110 − $100 = $10.
For other GST rates, replace 1.10 with (1 + rate/100).
Canada's federal GST is 5%. Some provinces have harmonized their provincial sales tax with the federal GST into a single HST (Harmonized Sales Tax): Ontario (13%), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland (15%), PEI (15%). Other provinces charge federal GST plus a separate provincial sales tax (PST).
