How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular hourly rate for all hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some states have additional overtime rules (e.g. California requires overtime after 8 hours in a single day).

Hours WorkedRateExample ($25/hr)
Hours 1–40 (regular)1× regular rate$25.00/hr
Hours 41+ (overtime)1.5× regular rate$37.50/hr
Double-time (some employers)2× regular rate$50.00/hr

Frequently Asked Questions

Overtime pay = overtime hours × (regular rate × 1.5). For example, if you earn $20/hour and work 45 hours in a week: regular pay = 40 × $20 = $800; overtime pay = 5 × $30 = $150; total = $950. Always confirm whether your employer or industry uses a different overtime threshold or multiplier, as some awards, contracts, or state laws vary.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. Common conversions: 15 min = 0.25, 30 min = 0.50, 45 min = 0.75. So 7 hours and 30 minutes = 7.5 hours; 8 hours and 15 minutes = 8.25 hours. Enter this decimal value in the day field above. The total is automatically summed across all days.
Under US federal law (FLSA), most hourly and non-exempt salaried employees are entitled to overtime pay at 1.5× for hours over 40/week. Exempt employees (executive, administrative, professional, and some outside sales roles earning above $684/week) are generally not entitled to overtime. In Australia, overtime entitlements depend on your Modern Award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract — many awards require penalty rates on weekends and public holidays in addition to hours over 38/week.
