Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate a restaurant tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For a 20% gratuity on a $50 bill: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip, making the total $60. Use the calculator above to handle any bill and tip percentage instantly — including splitting between multiple people.
In the USA, the standard gratuity at sit-down restaurants is 15–20%, with 20% or more for excellent service. In Canada a similar 15–20% is expected. In the UK, 10–15% is common but optional. In Australia and Japan, tipping is not customary. See the full tipping guide by country in the table above.
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide equally: Per person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of people. For example, a $120 bill with 15% tip = $138 total ÷ 3 people = $46 each. Use the Number of People field in the calculator to do this in one step.
