Frequently Asked Questions

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is New Zealand's withholding tax system. Your employer deducts income tax directly from your wages each pay period using the applicable tax code (M, ME, SH, SB, etc.) and pays it to IRD on your behalf. Most employed workers don't need to file an annual return as IRD auto-calculates whether you have a refund or bill.
The ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) Earner Levy funds NZ's no-fault accident compensation scheme, covering all residents for personal injuries — regardless of fault. For 2024-25 the rate is 1.60% on wages up to the maximum liable earnings cap ($139,384). It is deducted alongside PAYE from your pay.
