Need to add page numbers to a PDF before sharing or printing? This free tool lets you insert page numbers in any position — bottom centre, bottom right, top left, and more — with your choice of format, starting number, and font size. Useful for reports, contracts, academic papers, and any multi-page document that needs proper pagination. Everything runs in your browser — no file is ever uploaded. Encrypted and password-protected PDFs are fully supported via a high-quality image export.
Place numbers at bottom centre, bottom left, bottom right, top centre, top left, or top right — wherever your layout requires.
Plain numbers, "1 / 10" style, "Page 1" label, or "Page 1 of 10" — choose the format that matches your document style.
See exactly where page numbers will appear before downloading. Preview updates automatically as you change any setting.
Start numbering from any number. Useful for chapters or sections that continue from a previous document.
Encrypted or restricted PDFs are handled automatically. A high-quality image export ensures page numbers appear correctly.
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded or transmitted anywhere.
The tool adds numbers to all pages (or all except the first if you enable Skip First Page). For more granular control, split your PDF into sections first, number each section, then merge them back.
No. The tool adds a small text element to each page and nothing else. Fonts, images, layout, links, and all other content remain exactly as they were.
Yes. If the PDF cannot be modified directly, the tool automatically falls back to rendering each page as a high-quality image and building a new PDF with page numbers embedded. You can choose the export resolution (Medium, High, or Ultra) before downloading.
You can choose from four preset colours (black, grey, blue, red). Custom fonts are not supported — the tool uses Helvetica which is a standard PDF font available on all devices.
The tool adds new numbers without removing existing ones. If your PDF already has numbers, you may end up with duplicates. In that case, consider editing the original source document or using our Edit PDF tool to remove the existing numbers first.
