Add Page Numbers to PDF Online Free

Need to add page numbers to a PDF before sharing or printing? This free tool lets you insert page numbers in any position — bottom centre, bottom right, top left, and more — with your choice of format, starting number, and font size. Useful for reports, contracts, academic papers, and any multi-page document that needs proper pagination. Everything runs in your browser — no file is ever uploaded. Encrypted and password-protected PDFs are fully supported via a high-quality image export.

How to Number PDF Pages

  1. Upload your PDF — drag it onto the upload zone or click to browse. Encrypted PDFs are supported.
  2. Choose a position — bottom centre is the most common for professional documents.
  3. Select a format — plain numbers, "Page X", "X / Y", or "Page X of Y".
  4. Set the starting number and font size — defaults work for most documents.
  5. Skip the first page — enable this option if the first page is a cover or title page.
  6. Click Download — your numbered PDF saves directly to your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add numbers to only certain pages?

The tool adds numbers to all pages (or all except the first if you enable Skip First Page). For more granular control, split your PDF into sections first, number each section, then merge them back.

Will adding page numbers change anything else in the PDF?

No. The tool adds a small text element to each page and nothing else. Fonts, images, layout, links, and all other content remain exactly as they were.

Does it work on encrypted or password-protected PDFs?

Yes. If the PDF cannot be modified directly, the tool automatically falls back to rendering each page as a high-quality image and building a new PDF with page numbers embedded. You can choose the export resolution (Medium, High, or Ultra) before downloading.

Can I choose a custom colour or font?

You can choose from four preset colours (black, grey, blue, red). Custom fonts are not supported — the tool uses Helvetica which is a standard PDF font available on all devices.

What if my PDF already has page numbers?

The tool adds new numbers without removing existing ones. If your PDF already has numbers, you may end up with duplicates. In that case, consider editing the original source document or using our Edit PDF tool to remove the existing numbers first.
